Bank mandiri was established and acquired ownership of the share capital of four state-owned banks on October 2, 1998. The four state-owned banks legally merged on July 31, 1999 and Bank Mandiri commenced commercial operations in August 1999. Those four banks were Bank Bumi Daya (BBD), Bank Dagang Negara (BDN), Bank Expor Impor (Exim), and Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo). Now Bank mandiri is the largest bank in Indonesia in terms of total assets, loans and deposits. Bank Mandiri have vision and mission to be Indonesia's Most Admired & Progressive Financial Institution and to be market oriented, enhance professionalism, maximize returns to stakeholders, demonstrate concern for the community and environment.
As of December 2011, Bank Mandiri's total assets have reached Rp 551.9 trillion (equivalent to USD 60.86 billion), which is a growth of 15.6% (CAGR), making the company become one of the largest bank in Indonesia.The loans also grew by 22% (CAGR), the net profit grew by 38.3% (CAGR). Besides being the nation's largest lender (on a consolidated basis), Bank Mandiri is also the largest depository in the country with Rp 422.3 trillion (equivalent to USD 46.57 billion) in third party funds.
By September 2012,the bank had 1733 branches spread across three different time zones in the Indonesian archipelago and six branches abroad, the banking business is also supported by ATM network with 11,000 units throughout Indonesia.
Total assets as of Q3 2012 were IDR 588.4 trillion (or USD 59.8 billion). It also has Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 16,08% (including market risk), Return on Asset (RoA) of 3.45%, and Return on Equity (RoE) of 22.18%. As of September 2012, Bank Mandiri is the first largest bank in Indonesia by total assets.

Bank Mandiri is supported by six subsidiaries company. Each company engaged in different business sectors, they are: Finance, Insurance, Sharia banking. All of subsidiarties, namely: Bank Syariah Mandiri, Mandiri Sekuritas, Mandiri Tunas Finance, AXA Mandiri Financial Services, Bank Sinar Harapan Bali, and Mandiri AXA General Insurance.
