Established on July 5, 1946, known as Bank Negara Indonesia, is the first bank formed and owned by the Government of Indonesia. On October 30, 1946 a few months after the establishment of Bank Negara Indonesia began to circulate first official payment instrument issued by the Government of Indonesia, the ORI or Oeang Republic of Indonesia, until now celebrated as the Day of Finance National.
Following the appointment of the Dutch-inherited De Javasche as Bank Indonesia's Central Bank in 1949, Bank Negara Indonesia's role as the circulation and central bank was terminated. The Bank was instead designated as a development bank, and was later given rights to provide foreign reserve services, thus allowing direct foreign transactions.
In 1955, the status of Bank Negara Indonesia transformed into state-owned commercial banks, This Became the foundation for the Bank to provide a better and wider scope of assistance for the country's national business.
By the last quarter of 1968, the bank decide to attach its year of establishment to its name as part of its corporate identity, Officially changing the corporate name into Bank Negara Indonesia 1946. The Bank was then, Instant Referred to as' BNI 46 "for several decades. The Simpler name of 'Bank BNI' was Adopted in 1988 along with the change of corporate identity.
BNI legal status was upgraded in 1992 into a state-owned limited corporation with the name of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero), while the Bank decision up to become a public company was manifested through public offering of its shares in 1996.
Currently, BNI is the 4th largest bank in Indonesia by assets, total loans and total deposits. BNI offers integrated financial services to customers, supported by subsidiaries: Bank BNI Syariah, BNI Multi Finance, Securities and BNI BNI Life Insurance.
At the end of 2012, BNI has assets totaling Rp333, 3 trillion and employs more than 24 861 employees. To serve its customers, BNI operate a wide service network includes 1,585 domestic outlets and 5 overseas branches in New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore, 8,227 self-owned ATMs, 42,000 facilities EDC and SMS banking and Internet banking. BNI is always trying to be the bank of choice that provides excellent service and value-added solutions to all customers.
BNI 46 has Achieved various prestigious awards, and the new one's is Sustainable Business Award 2012 by category The Best State Owned Company and Banking and Finance Champion. The bank is also Achieved Indonesia Green Company Award 2012 from SWA magazine and Asean Business Awards 2012 from ASEAN, and much others.
Currently BNI 46 has 6 products and services in growing their banking business, namely: e-banking, credit card, loans, saving, simulation, investment.
Since February 6, 2008 BNI 46 lead by Gatot Mudiantoro Suwondo as President Director and Peter B.Stok as President Commissioner since May 27, 2009.
